Hmm. I think there's more than one point of view regarding that -- whether career politicians are an unfortunate side effect or a necessary evil in the design. That is, whether the representatives are supposed to be chosen from the people they represent, to be sample members of their communities standing in for larger groups; or people skilled specifically in the arts of governance and negotiation-with-other-politicians, hired (elected) to represent those communities using their professional politician skills.

Either way, you do make a good point: that asking the plumbers union to review laws in a democracy or republic isn't as goofy an example as it was supposed to sound like.
