"Let me get this straight.... The Justice Department, which is not known for its superabundance of medical doctors, is going to examine medical records to determine whether the opinions of licensed physicians are correct as regards 'medical necessity?' While we're at it, why don't we get the plumber's union to examine Justice Department records to determine whether its actions are legally permissible?" -- [livejournal.com profile] bbwoof, responding to news that Attorney General John Ashcroft demanded records of abortions performed on hundreds of women at six Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country

Actually, is that (getting the "plumbers' union", as a metaphor for the people of the nation, to review the actions of the administrative and judicial branch) the core idea of representative democracy? The Representatives are supposed to be a sampling of the population

That they are -- many if not most of them -- career politicians is an unfortunate but natural byproduct of the system.

Hmm. I think there's more than one point of view regarding that -- whether career politicians are an unfortunate side effect or a necessary evil in the design. That is, whether the representatives are supposed to be chosen from the people they represent, to be sample members of their communities standing in for larger groups; or people skilled specifically in the arts of governance and negotiation-with-other-politicians, hired (elected) to represent those communities using their professional politician skills.

Either way, you do make a good point: that asking the plumbers union to review laws in a democracy or republic isn't as goofy an example as it was supposed to sound like.

The subpeona was dropped after a circuit court judge ruled against it, knowing it was just a fishing expedition.

Good to know (and expected, actually) but it still annoys me that they tried.

yeah, but that's why the court system goes from local to state to federal.

all the hospital has to do is appeal, saying "why didn't these guys come up to the same conclusion" and it'll be readdressed in a way to cover the whole country.

THEN we can decide if its worth getting pissed off about. :)

I have never had, and am now not likely ever to need an abortion. But I will bare my fangs fervently against anything that threatens other women's rights not to bear children.

I came into menarche at about the time Roe v. Wade happened. I was always careful, but knew I didn't have to bear a child I either couldn't take care of or didn't want.

Trying to rifle women's medical records regarding one of the hardest decisions a woman can have to make reconfirms my distrust in this administration.

I do not see representative democracy here. There are those who try to represent the people, but they're not wealthy enough, or numerous enough.

And shrub's not_my_President. He (or his daddy, helped by bro' and his minions) bought/finagled his position and I'm some mix of embarrassed and disgusted. So I'm not surprised he's keeping a bunch of useless snoops too.

I just hope their whatever scheme stays bottled up long enough to get the lot evicted before they unfold it. For the sake of the girls reaching menarche who might be more fertile or less careful than I was. Nothing to make sure a child is left behind like having to bear one, eh?

(Snarls and snorts)

Living inside the Beltway affects one in hard ways. Want to go back to middle of nowhere.

"Trying to rifle women's medical records regarding one of the hardest decisions a woman can have to make reconfirms my distrust in this administration."

Agreed, as if my distrust of the administration needed any bolstering.

How do we convey this to the people who are undecided or who are planning to vote for Bush but could still be educated otherwise, as opposed to "preaching to the choir" land?

I don't know. I'm not sure it's possible. I've kind of passed the place of hope. I'm not sure there are any but the choir to preach to. Maybe undecideds. I keep waiting for a revelation. Too many people are ovine and determined about it. I'll keep working on it. If you come up with something, tell.

Ya can lead a horticulture but you can't make 'em think. (snort) Wasn't that H.L.Mencken?
