Fortunately, this country has a large and influential chunk of the economy devoted to fun. I'm not saying that it would be impossible for a sufficiently crazy government to try to shut it down, but full-fledged aescetism would be very hard to impose here.
And there's also the Bread & Circuses "keep us distracted" counterargument as well. But this administration does seem to be opposeed to certain categories of fun ... I dunno.
