As I was falling asleep: What if there were a law that said if a candidate were caught in a lie about his or her opponent in a campaign ad, he or she had to pay for the cost of running the rebuttal ad as many times and in the same places as the lie had run? (Not so much a serious proposal as a "wouldn't it be nice if we could enforce honesty?" pipe-dream.)
As I slept: I dreamt about making music on a ship and in a
mansion.
silmaril was there.
As I woke up: I faded into consciousness just in time to hear coverage of a Russian woman breaking the previous record for the Baltimore Marathon by eight minutes.

But then you have to define "lie"...
My idea was a bit different but in the same vain:
I don't think you can regulate the soft money ads. We should quit trying, but with a catch:
We don't put limits on soft money ads. We let people say whatever they want to say.
But every ad that expouses a political viewpoint is declared to be part of the public domain. This means that those who oppose you can use your ad in their ads, spoof them, put 3 robots in the corner laughing at them, rebut them point by point, use them as the basis for a porn flick, or do whatever else they want with them.
You let people say whatever they want. You just given them a huge incentive to be careful when they do it.

Not one of your better ideas.
