An inauguration day twofer:

"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." -- Mark Twain

"Politics is the entertainment branch of industry." -- Frank Zappa (I have also seen him quoted as saying, "Government is the Entertainment Division of the military-industrial complex," but the first version seems to be more frequently cited.)

I like these. They sum my feelings about where I was born quite neatly, and reassure me that I am, as I've always maintained, a patriot in the face of my government and its antics.

US politicos ...
"The First Amendment is often inconvenient. But that is besides the point. Inconvenience does not absolve the government of its obligation to tolerate speech."
-- Justice Anthony Kennedy

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
-- John F. Kennedy

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
-- Abraham Lincoln

"Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth."
-- John F. Kennedy

And not ...
"Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made president should on no account be allowed to do the job."
-- Douglas Adams, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

"With the first link, a chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
-- Picard, ST:TNG, quoting a fictional judge, "The Drumhead"

"The most certain test by which we judge whether a country is really free is the amount of security enjoyed by minorities."
-- Lord Acton

"Patriotism is thinly veiled racism."
-- Albert Einstein

Thank you, by the way. I'll recycle some of these. :-)

Yes, I collect only the finest in quotes. :-)

I use various ones in my email signatures. it is not unusual for me to get a reply that only talks about the quote.

Do you guys know of any quotes to the effort that nationialism is the modern form of idolatry? I'm convinced it's true, but I don't have the religious background to thunder about it adequately.

I'm sure I've seen that expressed, but have so far been unable to remember where. (Unless I'm misremembering a conversation with you as an article I've read, in which case we're looping. But I think I've read something that agreed with you...)
