No, Kirk, you miss the point, and I believe you miss it deliberately. The point of the exercise is to teach children not to be cruel to one another. Children don't send people to jail, so that's not germane. Children do bully, though, so that is germane.
You also miss the point of the red neck jokes.. the inbreed part is what is important in this discussion.. for a incestual couple that could be considered equal to the "bullying" that you refer to for a homosexual couple.
If you are against the bullying of homosexuals then why do leave out the bullying of nerds, geeks, short, fat, glasses, accident prone etc?
I see you have once again not bothered to inform yourself about the topic on which you hold forth. Since I know you won't click the link, here's the "tolerance pledge" in its entirety:
Tolerance is a personal decision that comes from a belief that every person is a treasure. I believe that America's diversity is its strength. I also recognize that ignorance, insensitivity and bigotry can turn that diversity into a source of prejudice and discrimination.
To help keep diversity a wellspring of strength and make America a better place for all, I pledge to have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identity or other characteristics are different from my own.
It's in there. Nerds, geeks, short, fat, glasses, accident prone, adult incestuous couples, polygamists... everyone. The point of the exercise is to teach that there is no one that it is acceptable to bully. No one is left out of this message.
Bullying happens to everyone at one point in time or another and although it can be discouraged it can not be stopped.
Yes it can. I know because it happened to me: some of the people who bullied me as a child stopped after intervention. It may be that we'll never reach zero bullying, but if we can reach minimal bullying, I'll accept that.
But you notice the oath does not include faith or religion.
"Bullying happens to everyone at one point in time or another and although it can be discouraged it can not be stopped." ""It may be that we'll never reach zero bullying""
I agree but the differance we have is how to address the problem. My solution is to say "bullying will not be tolerated" the other way is to covert everyone in to accepting the thing that they disagree with. This is th path you seem to perfer.

One more time:
To help keep diversity a wellspring of strength and make America a better place for all, I pledge to have respect for people whose abilities, BELIEFS, culture, race, sexual identity or OTHER CHARACTERISTICS are different from my own.
If you somehow don't think faith or religion are included in beliefs, then they're covered in other characteristics. It's in there.

"X will not be tolerated" hasn't had such a great track record with drugs, smoking, or bringing weapons to school. I'm not sure why you think it's adequate now.
The only thing this program seeks to get anyone to accept is the notion that bullying is unacceptable. One need not accept homosexuality -- or anything else -- in order to interact with homosexual people in a respectful manner.
Did we already determine that we simply can not communicate clearly to each other. Since for all you complains about me not getting it or not understanding it... I feel exactly the same about you.
So since it is clear we can not get our intents across to each other (after all you cut me out first) I see no reason to engage you in discuss. Kinda pointly sorta like talking to a tree.
I was rereading old entries this morning looking for something else (I'd forgotten what year I'd written about it but knew it was a January), and on rereading this particular thread it occurred to me that your comment is the one and only example I can recall of seeing the <blink> tag used in a manner and context I consider appropriate and useful.

Note that this is not the same thing as permitting someone to excuse bullying behavior by claiming that it grows from such a belief.

If you recall, I cut you out of my journal when you resorted to name calling.
A very late observation about formatting
