I have a funny rash high on my left arm. Fortunately, I've heard of a ritual that's supposed to make it go away, involving a towel, a metal talisman, and an annoyed cat. I just need to obtain the talisman (and ideally have someone demonstrate its correct use).

Of course, I'll need to perform this ritual again each time the sharp parts of the cat grow back, but I'm confident that it will clear up this skin condition.

:-)

On my first reading of this I thought the annoyed cat was an ingredient rather than an output.

I thought that too! Though I suppose in some cases, the ingredient would be "somewhat annoyed or bewildered cat" and then the output would be "SERIOUSLY annoyed cat".

I use a dremel with a grinding head to deal with my iguana's claws. Seems to be more effective, and have less chance of clipping the quick; Laurel, however, does not seem to be any less annoyed by this procedure.

Of our four cats, two of them take claw clipping rather calmly. Not surprisingly, Frenchy and Skye are also the same ones we are taking out in the Pets on Wheels nursing home visiting program. :)

As for our formal feral kittens, Stojko doesn't particularly like it, but if necessary we can wrestle him to the ground and get it done. (The mantra for dealing with Stojko is: "You may *think* you're top cat, but Mommy is still bigger and stronger than you are.") His sister Sato, on the other hand, her claws doesn't get clipped unless there's anesthesia involved [her, clippers, innocent bystanders, etc.].

So yes, I have one bumpy shoulder from lots of little pinpricks. :)

Or the proper use of the towel?
At leat what I remember of my long-ago reading of James Herriot would seem to indicate that there exist techniques of towelling that would prevent unco-operative operand from unco-operating too forcefully.

I am currently a children and dogs person. Back when I was a cats person, I used to swaddle the cat in a bath towel and croon lovingly and soothingly when I clipped its nails.

What I do with our boys is choose a time when I am NOT in a hurry. Spread something (towel or whatever) on the floor. Get cat one, lay the cat down and pet/scritch in favorite way, with forearm sort of lightly pin the animal. With a free hand, get the paw and fold the leg so it is close to the body ... according to the vet we take the boys to, the thing that annoys the cat the most is having its leg pulled out (esp. sideways), and extend the claws. Using the other hand (the one that is pinning the cat with the forearm) use the clipers. Be fast, straight, and avoid going close to where you can see pink in the claw. When you do a couple, scritch the cat then do some more (I pause for a quick scritche ever claw or two). After the procedure, I do something for the cat that it likes (The TOY, or a treat).

Then I repeat with the other cat. I do not necessarily get all 4 feet done in one session, it depends on the cat's mood. I do sometimes roll the cat over since Pooh really prefers having the paw worked on being the one not next to the ground.a

There exist two types of the metal implements. We got the smaller type that more resemble scissors than wire cutters and the cats were much happier (or as happy as they could be). Actually, the black kitty takes it much better than the older cat (who thinks his paws are sacrosanct).

It isn't as if I have not brought the talisman, use powder, and the managing cat gloves around more than once. We just never around to the performing of the ritual.
