Sorry to hear that the idiots of the world finally turned up too close at hand. You still have the satisfaction of having gone much longer than most without ~trouble. I'm glad to see you're not apparently dangerously long -term damaged. It may help to think that the neighborhood you're in actually caused them to run off sooner than they might have otherwise.

Given that they likely came in from a suburb, your neighbors may be willing to join you in setting up something along the lines of a neighborhood watch, which the police will sometimes even support or even encourage. They are also more likely to show up in timely fashion when called by a ~group that they have previous contact with.

The police have devolved back to the ~usual (for the USA) low level of quality here since I moved to Baltimore. For about three years in the early 1990s they were amazing. The then mayor had gotten a competent and take-no-crap police commisioner from somewhere in the North-East who made them follow their own rules and, after about six months of griping by the union, managed to get rid of the deadwood and brought morale up as high as anywhere I've ever seen. Seeing the cops do their job right the first time And within Minutes of a problem is something I don't ever expect to see again, but it was very nice for those few years. If you feel strongly that it should be a higher priority, send email (and a physical copy) to the mayor and council member for your district and, just maybe, they'll be a little more awake on it. Several of your friends could probably be persuaded to join in the letter writing if you asked around.

If you do decide to carry ~something~ and want help with a ~holster or support system for it that doesn't interfere with movement, clothing or show much on the ~outside, let me know. I used to carry a crowbar to high school upon occasion in such an arrangement Many moons ago and no-one ever suspected until I pulled it out from under my light sweater.
