Sorry to leave folks hanging for several hours after mentioning at the end of my previous entry that breathing was painful. I did decide, shortly after posting that, to call for an ambulance. Which arrived in as much time as it took to reestablish my PPP connection and start to edit an addendum onto that entry. (And with my cell phone out of order, I couldn't post an update from the ER.)

The short answer to the question I know many of you have: I've got a contusion somewhere inside my torso, which is what makes taking full breaths (and standing upright, and lying on my back) so painful. It seems there's nothing modern medicine can do for such an injury except prescribe painkillers and wait. OTOH, it just hurts like a #$#%!rf*%^$r as opposed to, like, potentially killing me or something.

A little more info: after not having shown up by the time I called for an ambulance (an hour after my first 911 call), the police also failed to materialize when called by the ambulance crew. They did eventually show up at the hospital, but I had to tell my story to three different officers (a fourth was involved but didn't ask for his own repetition) while finding it more and more difficult to concentrate past the pain. Despite my right cheek puffing up rather impressively and being quite tender, I'm not showing much visible bruising on my face (at least so far).

I'll try to get around to more details later, but for now I'll just point out that I'm not terribly happy with the performance of the Baltimore police, nor with the five hours of being mostly left alone in pain in the ER. (On the way in, I remarked that "this is probably a pulled muscle or something and I'll feel foolish for racking up a huge medical bill for it," ... but I'd have felt foolish if it turned out to be Something Major that I ignored until too late, too.)

I hope y'all will forgive me for postponing replying to the many supportive comments I came home to. I am very, very tired right now. [livejournal.com profile] anniemal just arrived, and later I'll ask her to drive me to a pharmacy to deal with the prescriptions I got.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I wish you speedy healing and that those f*ckers get it on their turn of the karmic wheel.

I'd be surprised if you recall/recognize me, we haven't seen each other in at least 10 years. You might not have known me by any name other than 'phred'.

I heard about what happened from [livejournal.com profile] still_asking, and I wanted to say 'hi' and, well, let you know how much I think it stinks, and make that vague sort of 'is there anything we can do' kind of offer.

If there's anything [livejournal.com profile] scooterbird and I can do, please let us know.

ouch, does not sound like fun, so glad you called the ambulance and even if its something they can't do a lot about, they checked it out to be sure it wasnt anything worse.. hope the painkillers kick in soon enough, and that the police can be suitably kicked up the behind for being so incredibly useless.

*hugs* don't worry about reponses, just take care of you, glad [livejournal.com profile] anniemal is able to help out.

Oy! Sorry to hear about your being attacked. Glad to hear you're mostly in one piece and sending best wishes for quick healing.

Gads ... yipe. I'm sorry, and I'm relieved that you seem to be more or less intact. Please take care of yourself.

Glad to hear you got yourself checked out. I can only hope those knuckle-dragging mouthbreathers get what's coming to 'em.

I hope you heal quickly and completely.

As far as the huge medical bill, if the cops find them, sue them. Or, if they turn out to be minors, sue their parents. You might not collect but at least you can ruin their credit rating. Explore whether the court can make restitution part of their sentence. You might also check into what your area offers in the way of services for crime victims.

Good luck. Wish I were in a position to offer more immediate help.

There are a few places to go in Baltimore that come under Victims' Services:
  • Maryland State Board of Victim Services, 410-321-3521
  • The mayor's Coordinating Council on Criminal Justice: 410-396-4370. It's more of a referral service, I gather. But since O'Malley signed the transgender-rights ordinance a few years ago, he might be able to light a fire under the police if you can get some contacts from others (see below)—the mayor's office # is (410) 396-3835.
  • The Baltimore state attorney's office victim/witness assistance office: 410-396-1897
  • Maryland attorney general's Criminal Investigation Division Victim Services Coordinator, (410) 576-6380
  • Maryland attorney general's Victim Assistance Unit: 410-576-6405
  • Maryland Commission on Human Relations: 410-767-8600 (related to discrimination)
  • Maryland Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, 410-585-3010
  • Metro Crime Stoppers,410-244-8888; Confidential hotline, 410-276-8888. I suspect it's for things like shootings, but they'd know where to turn for hate crimes.
  • Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore, (410) 837-5445 (on the hate-crime aspect of this and also because they'd know who in the mayor's office could help)
  • Washington-Baltimore Transgender Alliance, (301) 649-3960 (same thing)
  • Chi Epsilon Sigma, Tri-Ess, a heterosexual cross-dressing support group who may know of resources or key contacts.

I'm posting this as a reply not because I expect [livejournal.com profile] dglenn to have the energy to follow up immediately but to be a resource over the next few days. If you're a local friend who can accompany him to the police ([livejournal.com profile] anniemal?), insist that they ask for witnesses in the immediate area, because someone may be able to identify one or more of the perpetrators or have some details on the cars.

Thank you for following up when you could. I am glad you got checked out. Having had a cracked sternum, I sympathize with your pain - pain meds are the win in such cases, because there's little else you can do about it aside from resting a LOT.

Like [livejournal.com profile] make_your_move points out, those bastards WILL get it on the turn of the karmic wheel. Granted, if I had my way it would be REAL SOON NOW, but it WILL happen.

*hugs*

I'm just glad you're all right.

Baltimore needs better police.

Ow.

Bastards. Glad you're more-or-less (well, less) OK; sounds like it could've been much worse.

One more echo of "Hope they catch the assholes."

And one more for "Find a self-defense or martial arts class." Quite aside from the value in coping with future hypothetical assaults, it'd probably help with this one to feel like you're doing something about it.

*hugs hugs hugs* I just saw BOTH posts this morning, and I am fuming... both at people being so horrid to you, AND at the lack of support/care from the emergency services people.

I'm sorry, but even on a "probably not life threatening" injury, on a Saturday night, there is NO EXCUSE for a whole hour before someone shows up.

Let alone the police taking forever to respond.

Personally, I'd be pursuing both of THOSE as well as pressing charges if they catch the people who hurt you.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do for you...

I am a friend of [livejournal.com profile] merde so you don't know me directly.

As with everyone else, I'm sorry that this shit happened to you. It's terrible that it took place in your own neighborhood.

I hope that as the physical pain subsides you can work through all the stuff that's left in your head from this.

I have been on the wrong end of gender enforcement and I wanted revenge so bad.

Check and see if there is some sort of victim's compensation program that could help with medical bills, loss of work, and the like.

Hoping your healing is fast.

You might recognize me if you saw me; I'm kind of on the fringe of your list of aquaintances. I read about this in [profile] efbq's journal, and I wanted to say I'm very sorry to hear about it, and good luck recovering. Bigotry, in all its forms, is a push-button of mine, and I'm sorry you've been a victim of it. Take care.

I've been offline for awhile and I missed your previous entry. I'm so sorry to hear about what caused your injury, and I wish you the speediest of recovery (both mind and spirit).

Holy shit...

I don't know what to say, but am feeling the same outrage and anger at the assholes. Relief that you'll be okay with time, upset and general pissiness with the Baltimore PD, and just hope that the fuckwads are caught.

when you're better, call them and ask to speak to their internal investigations or Ombudsman. That's completely unacceptable that they ignored 2 emergency calls.

In the big scheme of things, "a group of people attacked me and drove away" is necessarily lower on the police priority list than "there's a beating going on right now".

Still not a good situation, though.

I didn't see this, or the previous entry, until now.

White-hot, Glenn, I'm in white-hot rage, and feeling stupidly helpless.

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

But I am all the more glad that you are not more seriously hurt.

Sorry to hear that the idiots of the world finally turned up too close at hand. You still have the satisfaction of having gone much longer than most without ~trouble. I'm glad to see you're not apparently dangerously long -term damaged. It may help to think that the neighborhood you're in actually caused them to run off sooner than they might have otherwise.

Given that they likely came in from a suburb, your neighbors may be willing to join you in setting up something along the lines of a neighborhood watch, which the police will sometimes even support or even encourage. They are also more likely to show up in timely fashion when called by a ~group that they have previous contact with.

The police have devolved back to the ~usual (for the USA) low level of quality here since I moved to Baltimore. For about three years in the early 1990s they were amazing. The then mayor had gotten a competent and take-no-crap police commisioner from somewhere in the North-East who made them follow their own rules and, after about six months of griping by the union, managed to get rid of the deadwood and brought morale up as high as anywhere I've ever seen. Seeing the cops do their job right the first time And within Minutes of a problem is something I don't ever expect to see again, but it was very nice for those few years. If you feel strongly that it should be a higher priority, send email (and a physical copy) to the mayor and council member for your district and, just maybe, they'll be a little more awake on it. Several of your friends could probably be persuaded to join in the letter writing if you asked around.

If you do decide to carry ~something~ and want help with a ~holster or support system for it that doesn't interfere with movement, clothing or show much on the ~outside, let me know. I used to carry a crowbar to high school upon occasion in such an arrangement Many moons ago and no-one ever suspected until I pulled it out from under my light sweater.

grrrrrrrrrrrr. Just saw this and read your previous post. What complete and utter wastes of DNA those guys were.

I'm glad you're not seriously (as in life-threatening or broken bones/damaged organs) injured. I'm angry that you're injured at all. And I'm glad that someone is there with you to help.

I'm a friend of [livejournal.com profile] merde, with experience of being beaten up by complete strangers when close to home. A couple of comments occurred:
  • I hope you make a swift, full recovery.
  • It may be advisable to get photographic evidence of the injuries, either for victim compensation schemes or in case the police actually get off their asses to look for the perps.
  • Don't waste too much time on analysing the incident. Random assholes aren't worth it, and that way doth misery lie (based on my own experiences).
