The instructions:

Go to MusicOutfitters.com.
In the Search box, enter the year you graduated high school.
The first item returned should be the 100 most popular songs from that year. Cut and paste them into your journal.

Bold the ones you like.
Underline your favorite.
Strike through the songs you loathe.

I'm surprised at how many of these I simply don't remember. (OTOH, some of my then-favourites didn't make the top-100 list.) Also, I hated some songs that later grew on me, and got sick of a few that I'd originally thought kind of cute. I tried to answer according to my tastes then, as well as I could recall.

maybe you should add an instruction : italic the ones you simply don't remember. :)

I think it would be better to italicize ones that you DO remember but are apathetic about. Certainly easier than your way, at least in 2001. Avoids emphasizing crud as well.:)

A good idea. I decided to do that on my meme. The ones not bolded, italicized, or striked out are the ones I remember but don't feel one way or another about.

So, what year is this from? I'm betting 1981-1982, because I remember most of these from around the time I graduated.

well, the albums for many of those songs are 1979 or 1980 (Genesis Misunderstanding is from Duke, Sara from Fleetwood Mac is from 1979's Tusk, Queen's Crazy Little Thing is from 1980's The Game). However, singles at the time had a knack for lasting longer (or being released long after the album) as a way of keeping sales up and even. today's market of hit 'em hard and fast and then move on to the next hit wasn't quite so abusive back then.

They only go up to 2001. Not that I graduated in 2002. That would preposterous. Only nogoodniks could have graduated in 2002, and I am no nogoodnik. *shiftyeyes*

Don't worry about it. I don't know WTF charts they're using to make this listing, but I didn't recognise 90% of the songs on it, and the other 10% for 1994 were just simply TEH KRAP. I wonder if there's any such equivalent listings for Canadian top-100 charts, because our musical landscape is a little different... Seems to me that in the 1994 radioscape I remember, the Barenaked Ladies were pretty popular, they were playing "King of Spain" by Moxy Fruvous quite a bit ("Once I was...the King of Spain...and now I'm workin' at PizzaPizza..."), and so on.

Ah, quite. Some of the obscure stuff on mine sounds like Country and/or Western. That's definitely bigger in the States.

I'll try it. But I'm using 1976, because that's the last year that I paid any attention at all to popular music, and I never did actually graduate from high school. I would have graduated in '78, but was kind of long gone by then.
