This was the first beastie to come to mind. Also known as a red rat snake. It's non-poisonous, but has been known to "buzz" its tail against dry leaves. It's also been mistaken for a copperhead (I checked pics of those, too, and copperheads aren't nearly as brightly colored, IMO.)
Hm. The Eastern Garter Snake has a "red phase" and is classed as "striped" (as opposed to banded or blotched), but when I looked at it, the pattern looked almost like a checkerboard. (o.O)
