Every translation is a commentary. But often you don't care. If it's really important, read more than one translation (and favor those with annotations). When it's really really important, it's time to consider delving into the original language. But for casual reading? Nah.

(I'm very slowly learning Biblical Hebrew because I've decided it's really really important. But I've never learned Italian or German or Greek, nor do I expect to.)

One of my more amusing linguistic experiences was watching a movie and paying attention to which jokes were or were not translated into the various subtitles. (English movie, Hebrew and French subtitles.)
