"The relative privelege and affluence of the American working classes are the result of long, hard struggles for unions, shorter hours, higher wages, more days off, more benefits, etc., and a lot of the people who fought those fights were - surprise, surprise - greatly influenced by the Communist Manifesto." -- graymouser, 2005-06-01

Shorter hours? Higher wages? More days off?

Why did you stop already?

Is this actually a surprise to anyone?

And this is also said as if it's a bad thing, which makes me sigh, because of how reactionary Americans can be, how if someone [this case Communists] have been their enemy, then surely everything about them must be bad and evil. Communism is a sort of socialism, which - even if you're not left leaning, one must admitt generally attempts to take care of the people involved. Even if it's only the theory which works and its execution is horribly bodged.

Well, if American laws are partly based on the Communist Manifesto, it stands to reason that there needs to be a ten metre engraved monument to it in front of every courthouse in the country lest people forget. Engrave it with, say, the ten first sentences of the Manifesto. Seems like the obvious thing to do.:)
