"'Nude' is when you're not wearing any clothes; 'naked' is when you're not wearing any clothes and you're up to something." -- [livejournal.com profile] scooterbird, 2006-12-30 or 2006-12-31 (not sure which side of midnight he said it).

I first heard this from Lewis Grizzard, who insisted that the state of not wearing clothes was properly "nekkid". :)

This made me giggle. Thanks. :)

Inaccurate!

"Nude" is when you're not wearing any clothes, and it's expected (shower, locker room, etc.)
"Naked" is when you're not wearing any clothes, and it's unexpected (walked in on, middle of your living room, walking down the street.)
"Nekkid" is when you're up to something. :)

Exactly.

The way I learned it a long time ago (not supported by etymology IIRC, alas) is that "nude" means unadorned and "naked" means unprotected. So by that definition, wearing a hat and a string of pearls but nothing else would constitute naked but not nude, and wearing an invisible force-field and a sidearm would amount to being nude but not naked (unless it was a rather decorative sidearm).

It seems there are several variations on this theme; I find most of them entertaining. I wonder whether that says more about nudity, about language, or about me ...

It's true that I prolly heard the expression somewhere before...but then a) it wouldn't be the first time I'd malapropped something into a quoteworthy form (such as, "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup," whom I was the first to coin), and b) the important and salient point is to get out of one's clothes, which I for the most part approve of.

I cannot call this subject as a hobby as it became my life with
the advent of your site!

worker-bee spam?
The Firefox Browse Images extension is perfect for pages like that. Workerbees is not worth the visit, except maybe for http://www.workerbees.biz/images/elisa.jpg and http://www.workerbees.biz/images/maryworkman.jpg.

And I, silly me, find clothing a convenience or imposition, depending on my temperature. I'm accustomed to all sorts of bodies in states of dress or un-, and think little about it unless I have to.

People get so weird when one isn't draped outdoors. Somehow I fail to equate lack of clothing with lewd behaviour, unless someone wants me to. They have to call my attention to it.

But that's an entirely separate thing from being clothesless. We were born that way, after all. And I don't think it would be a bad idea to become happy with our bodies. Put "Je suis content a ma peaux." on your wall. Eventually you will be.
