"I don't know what the book is about. But when the government bans a book, there is something interesting in it. So, I'm buying the book out of curiosity." -- Ahmad Abbasi, buying a book in Tehran that had just been banned by the Iranian government, November 2007 (as quoted in a news story 2007-11-17

This is not just clever, it's hopeful. We were wondering how
he could even buy a book that had been banned, much less
survive the experience.

The first edition was erroneously[*] aproved for publication; after a complaint, the second edition (and I assume additional print runs of the first edition) was banned, but the police didn't go into the book stores to confiscate copies of the first edition already on the shelves. The price, of course, went up.

I try to make it a point to watch movies which are banned in the U.K. (sometimes just parts of the U.K., like Scotland banning the movie "Life of Brian") or Ireland or anywhere else I've been (and I would understand the language).

Did they say what book was banned? I'm curious. I think I have read all of the top 10 of most banned books in the U.S. (locally banned, usually by counties/cities).

Sad, eh? Even here there are problems.

From the CNN article: "The novel, known as Memories of My Melancholy Whores in the West, was translated into Persian as Memories of My Melancholy Sweethearts." It's by Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

You have no idea how many books I own specifically because they are / have been "banned" by some group or another. For a long while, I was the crazy banned book chick to the bookstores in Alexandria and the surrounding areas, as I would start visiting them in June, reminding them that Banned Books Week was coming up, and encouraging them to have displays, etc.
