"I hate hate hate the way that people equate 'anything we can legally do to discourage abortion, no matter how much it treats women as The Enemy and basically nonpersons' with 'respect for life'.

"Because, I'm sorry, NO. If you *actually* have respect for life, that doesn't end at birth. If you have respect for life, that includes respect for women. If you have respect for life, that includes respect for Iraqis. If you have respect for life, that includes respect for the poor. If you have respect for life, that includes respect for the victims of torture. If you pass laws against abortion, all that proves is that you can pass laws against abortion. Well, good for fucking you."

One I have used in teaching highs school history:
"We should pass a law against it is a very common answer to a lot of problems. Because, as we all know, drinking under age and smoking pot at all are illegal which is why they never, ever happen, right?"

I have always maintained that the soi-disant "Pro-Life" movement is in reality far less about saving the lives of unborn alleged infants than it is about controlling the behavior of their mothers. How else to explain the fact that many of the same ones who so stridently object to abortion being legal also object to any form of contraception, which would obviate the need for abortion in the first place?

Yikes, that's always bothered me... rather than focus on banning abortion, why not provide enough emotional and financial support to mothers and infants that people feel like they have other options??
