Huh. I learned something today I hadn't known about the global symbolism of black and white checkered pieces of cloth.

I never realized NASCAR and its fans supported terrorists before. (Or are they going to find some replacement for the checkered flag so at "not to offend"?)

Not intended as insightful political commentary or an in depth analysis of semiotics. Today I am too exhausted for anything more than gratuitous snarkage.

Umm... what? You mean there's some other meaning to the checkered flag other than the race is over?

(I mean, other than the fact that Junior didn't win. Again.)

If you're a sufficiently paranoid right-wing blogger who can't tell different shapes of black and white patterns apart, then it signals support for Palestinian terrorists. Or donuts.

You disapprove of James Bond?

I'm afraid it's a rather specific pattern of black and white. NASCAR will have to stop thinking itself suddenly chic.

Well yeah, as far as I could tell from Wikipedia and a bunch of other sources, but apparently that little detail didn't matter to Malkin (and a bunch of anti-scarf commenters elswhere described the relevant pattern as "checkered"), so I figured if they weren't being picky about the pattern why should I?

Huh?

Apparently, if you wear a scarf with a repeating black and white pattern on it in a television commercial, Michelle Malkin will claim that it's a pro-Palestinian symbol, regardless of whether the pattern resembles the relevant one or not ... and a bunch of Malkin apologists are describing the latticework pattern as "checkered". So in the interest of substituting snark for stupidity, I extended their extension a step farther to encompass the motorsports checkered flag.

I'm surprised Ray's stylist, Dunkin Donuts, or somebody else hasn't posted a photo of the Terrorist Donut Scarf spread out flat so folks can see how dissimilar the pattern is from what it's being portrayed as by the wingnuts.

I believe that d'glenn is speaking about this..

Rachael Ray ad pulled as pundit sees terror link (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24860437/)

It even made it to several "foodie" blogs... Here's a sample...
