(By analogy to "typo"...) Either somebody at CNN made a "thinko" or somebody else engaged in pointless PhotoShop exercises: [There was a screen-capture here of a CNN broadcast showing text stating that the space shuttle Columbia was travelling at 18 times the speed of light. The URL that pointed to that image now calls up an odd billboard, so I've replaced the IMG tag with this note, 2002-02-22.] (Note that the directory in the URL is "temp", so I've got no idea how long that IMG tag will point to the right place. I'd point to the page containing the image, but all I got in email was the URL of the JPG.)

Mood:: 'tired' tired
Music:: Kansas, "Carry On My Wayward Son", on the radio

Its not a photo-shop trick. Someone in CNN editorial messed up. Wolfe actually even said "light" on the air (corrected himself a few minutes later). When they switched to speed of sound, the first version said "Mock 18" instead of "Mach".

Oh man, that's disturbing. I think I'd be happier thinking someone was creepy enough to Photoshop that than knowing that however many people in the chain from writer to Wolfe (including both ends of the chain) could have that mistake not leap screaming from the page and attack their retinas with flashing red lights before it got spoken and shown. Ouch!

Yah, that's, uh ... how does warp factor work again? ... I think 18*c is something like warp factor 4.5?? (Doggone it, I used to know this stuff!)

Original Trek, I can tell you. I think they revised it for Picard.

Warp 10 is 1000 times the speed of light. 10 cubed.

Warp 2 is eight times.

So it would take half a year to get to Alpha Centauri at warp 2.

I looked at the galactic map in the original Tech Maunal, and it doesn't work. Where the various adventures are, around the map, Kirk and Spock and company would have to spend decades between encounters.

It's so nice to think these things out in advance. Pity no one does.

*giggle* Well, SOME people do, but I agree, the warp thing didn't work.

When I was 13, I started to memorize Star Trek. When it went off the air for the first time, when I was 16, I stopped trying to remember everything about it.

Mind like a mousetrap. I wish I could let some of the mice go.

I rejoice every time I forget the title of an episde.
