I hear -- literally and repeatedly -- that the pre- Independence Day firecracker season has started a little earlier in Baltimore this year than it did last year.

This is just bored people tossing ladyfingers off their back porches. Over and over. And the occasional bottle rocket.

ohh what a waste of good pastry!! *beams innocently* I know, they must be some form of rocket or another, but my initial reaction was *really! --ladye fingers??* I'm a dork, I know, but I'm sure, (at least I hope) lovable none-the-less... hehehe.

Pbbbt!

(In the firecracker context, a ladyfinger is one of those brightly-coloured or pattern-printed cardboard cylinders about an inch and a half long and a quarter inch in diameter (fuzzy memory -- it's been a while since I've looked at one up close), about the smallest firecracker big enough to be against the law in places that restrict such things.)

I thought ladyfingers werre the really tiny firecrackers that were a half inch long and like a sixteenth in diameter

Well, I did say my memory was fuzzy on that score.

Which of course, Maryland does. The frst principle o law to remember, though is that laws are meaningless if they are unefnforceable.

Are they doing a fireworks night down at Camden Yards?

I know they did fireworks last Friday night after the game. Steve wants to go but we had this prior committment....

Seriously, the Baltimore thing with making lots of noise is one of the few uneasy thoughts I have about my upcoming move.

Nope, or at least I didn't hear anything that sounded like an aerial display. It's all ground level and small, with amplification from echoing off walls an alley-width apart.

I just saw the first billboard advertising fireworks. They're illegal in New York, but the shop being advertised is in Pennsylvania and is only a twenty minute drive away.

Hmmmm.

Maryland has police watching the most heavily travelled routes to and from DC around this time of year, looking for suspiciously timed return trips that suggest a visit to a fireworks stand just inside the city. I don't know whether they do something similar along the PA border or not, nor whether NY would do the same.

i'm amazed it hasn't started yet here. usually my neighborhood is all about the explosions for at least a week before and after the 4th.

i can't seem to talk anyone into coming over for the 4th, alas. which is sad, because my neighborhood puts on a surprisingly decent amateur show every year. the cats hate it, of course, but it's a lot of fun to watch while drinking on the balcony. and my balcony is pretty much the best seat in the house.

And Arlington has aerials for three days straight, usually. And if you like crowds, the District gets really happy. We just climb up on the roof and see what's where. The little explosions haven't started yet. Usually just a week before and a few days after. This neighbourhood is to stuffy/dignified/jaded for too much excitement. Which is fine with me.

Too much exploding=thumpy car stereo=annoyed anniemal and a cringy dog.
