eftychia: Me in kilt and poofy shirt, facing away, playing acoustic guitar behind head (Default)

Well, it finally happened. I got physically bashed.

I wandered out to try to figure out which direction the thumpy bass I'd been hearing for the past three hours was coming from, and while I stood near the corner looking down Fulton Ave., two vehicles pulled up on Lombard St. at the stoplight behind me. They started making comments about how I was dressed. I turned around. They got more emphatic. One driver started to get out and someone yelled, "Get his camera," then everyone else got out. I had hope that it'd just be an exchange of words until two of them started swinging -- one at the camera, one at my face -- after which the others joined in. I took blows to both eyes, one cheek, and my temple, and went down badly, hurting my back and scraping my elbows. Fortunately they didn't continue after I fell, running back to their vehicles instead and zooming off.

I staggered back to my door, unplugged the modem, and dialed 911. I am still waiting for the police to arrive. *grumble* I'm feeling less and less goodwill toward the police.

These were not people from my neighbourhood. They were too nicely dressed (khakis instead of sweats and jeans, slightly too-nice shirts -- still casual, still sneakers that I dodged a kick from). Six to eight young African-American men. (I was noting locations of the nearest ones, not counting); I think at least three, probably four, landed blows on me. Their rides were a little too new, too recently washed. They weren't from my neighbourhood. They were passing through, and took the time and trouble to pummel a stranger who looked funny.

Right now I feel three things: loss, because after swatting the flash off my camera one of them snatched it, and that was my last properly-working flash; frustration, because there's no chance the police are going to find these assholes and bring them to justice; but mostly rage. If I thought I had a chance of locating them, I'd be in my car with camera and sword in hand looking for payback.

They beat me up in my own neighbourhood, meters from my own house, and they weren't from here. They were passing through and assaulted me on my street. I'm pissed. I want to do something that'll make them regret this. But there's probably nothing I can do.

So the remaining question is whether the police can do anything to make this kind of thing less likely, and will they?

Oh yeah, a fourth thing I feel. Pain. One cheek feels like it's swelling up quite a bit, my elbow burns, and I can't stand up quite straight because of pain below my left shoulderblade. (Should I have asked the 911 operator for an ambulance? [Edit: Shortly after posting this entry I did decide the inability to take full breaths was scary enough to call an ambulance for. The ambulance arrived before I could edit this entry to say so. See this followup) But the pain, as strong as it is, is no match for the anger.

They don't fucking do this to me on my block. I shouldn't have to fear it anywhere, but especially not at home.

And so ends a decades-long streak of being very visible and never getting attacked for it. (The fellow who came after me with a baseball bat years ago did so out of what later became known as road rage, and I was wearing boyclothes, coat and tie, at the time; the one other time I felt a person verbally harrassing me might turn violent, I was able to slip away.) I really liked being able to say I was one of the lucky few, to keep that streak going. I kind of counted on being able to mollify friends who worried for my safety by saying, "I know people like me get attacked, but so far I've been okay." As of now, I'm another statistic.

A really fucking angry statistic who'll be thinking about going armed.

That is truly fucking terrible, if it makes you feel any better rest assured that the prepetraitors will meet their end young and at the hands of people worse than them...

//Also, I had never realized from reading your LJ that you are gender queer...

Oh, gods.

I'm glad you're alive.

I hope the police get on this and find the little bastards.

Also, I'd say definitely get an ambulance; there may be internal injuries that you need to have checked out.

Ick. I got nailoed a couple of times years back because I was white in a black neighborhood.

If you can, try to find any paperwork you have on the flash. Odds are they'll try to pawn it. And if you can ID it, the cops *can* bust the person who pawned it. (Alas, in many places, you'll have to *buy* it back from the pawnbroker).

fuck. I'm so glad you're ok. There are times when eye for an eye seems cryingly right to me; especially when it's my friends.

I have a nice bounce flash I can get out of storage for you, and I think a non-bounce. I haven't used them in years, so I need to see if I can find them, but they're standard SLR base (both about 10 years old). Will you be at Baitcon? If not I can suspects courier it to you.

Holy crispy crap... I think you should also get checked out, just to make sure you're ok. Pain under the shoulder blade could in fact be internal injuries of some sort.

I think I'll be calling Andrea tomorrow, to see about checking up on you. In the meantime, ice, rest, and Perrine.

*hug* I'm glad you're at least somewhat functional. If there's anything I can do, please tell me.

May they rot impaled on pungee sticks. And that's the nicest thing I can think of for them.

Go get prepared; learn martial arts and/or get armed. And if you need to, kick some coccyx.

May you never ever need to.

Having been pointed here by another filker - I'm very sorry to hear this happened to you, I'm sorry to hear that things like this happen at all, to anyone and are apparently thought of as "ok" by those attackers & people like them/they interact with.

I second the "get yourself checked out properly" advice to make sure you've not got unnoticed-as-yet internal injuries.

I'm concerned this has you thinking about going armed, as I don't believe that will solve anything. I'm relieved your attackers at least did not have/use knives or guns.
But the problem is the attitude that it's ok to beat up someone considered "weird". It is not. It should never be, even if all society agrees on what is "weird". You should never have had to even THINK about whether it's better to go armed.

*sighs* I'm sorry this happened to you & wish you well for recovery both internal and external.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. So far, I've been lucky, but I'm not conceited enough to think it's anything more than luck. Close calls, yes, but no actual violence. I also don't have a lot of confidence in the police doing the right thing, even down here in DC where they have a Gay specialty sqaud (I forget the correct name for it).

Great. Assholes looking for violence. I'm really sorry this happened to you; I'm offended it happened to anyone. That's just... evil.

Was there anyone else on the street who might be a witness?

I wasn;t there, so I can;t say for sure, but probably not. These assholes are very careful to act where there is no one to 1) see them, and 2) possibly interfere.

This sucks. I'm sorry to hear about it - and I think packing a little heat, and knowing how to use it, might not be such a bad thing.

Victoria and I were just reading this and I want you to let me know if there is anything I can do. She, basically, is appalled.

Remember, I'm close and Tangent and I have cars. Ambuli are uncomfortable and leave no way home from the hospital, we could drive you to an ER or urgent care or just go to a drug store an pick up first aid supplies if you need something. (I can also check the back of my med cabinet and see if I find anything there.)

Also if my kid wasn't here, I'd really curse out the cowards who thought that 4 to 8 on one was fair odd for a fight they picked.

Fucking assholes. I can't believe it. I certainly don't blame you for being angry. I am.

Please take the time to go to the hospital and get checked out. As others have already noted, it's better to be safe than sorry. We all care about you!

What kind of flash was it? I know nothing about camera-lore, but how replaceable is it?

Please, please get your injuries checked out professionally. Have someone take you to the hospital if necessary.

I'm echoing what others have said re reporting it to the cops and reporting the theft of the flash.

Give a lot of thought to going armed before you take that step. I'm saying this because I don't think the kind of weapon you could carry in a pocket easily is going to a) work with the clothes you wear because of their cut or b) actually stop a group of people and might make them madder, and c) you don't always want to carry a bag to put it in. Have you considered checking out self-defense classes that will work for you?

::hugs::

Yuck! As so many others, I'm sorry to hear about this awful thing happening to you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I agree with the folks who say that you should get medically checked out as soon as possible. Also, someone suggested investigating martial arts, and I would second that, if you are interested - it's not a quick fix, but a good long-term help.

Dear Gods, what is WRONG with people? How dare they do that? I hope you're OK!! Get an ambulance, you may need it. Shit, I'm so sorry this happened to you!

You said you want to meet them sword in hand, well... It's not always easy to walk around with a sword (it's kinda cool though)

I've come across a nifty little thing it is a chinese "chien" sword that collapses and you can carry it in a small bag.

I haven't bought one yet and don't know how usable they are, but I intend to find out.

I am going to give you a link from a french site because that's where I found a good picture but I'm sure you can find one of those swords in any decent martial arts shop.

http://www.dragonbleu.fr/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=6154&VisID=

Now you want to think twice before you actually use that sword on someone, because last time you got away with a few bruises, imagine you had defended yourself with a sword and they came back next day with guns, dogs, whatever ...

Generally speaking I never use any weapon against anyone unless I have a reasonable belief that they are really attempting at my life, and if I ever do use a weapon in a real fight I'll do with the idea that either nobody can identify me andd get back to me for retaliation/escalation or no witness should walk out of that fight breathing.

One thing you might consider too is a very powerful whistle, it will deter most oponents.

yours
