It's been a while since I've been organized enough to do anything to celebrate my birthday, and as long as we're counting in decimal I've got a round-number bithday coming up, so this year I plan to do something. Alas, I'm still not organized, so I'm planning something small and simple: going to a restaurant for dinner and hoping a bunch of my friends will pick the same restaurant. It means probably not having a birthday jam session (unless we wind up being the only people in the restaurant, I guess), but it also means not having to get Mom's house in shape for a party, and getting to dress as myself on my birthday. And celebrating my birthday at an Ethiopian restaurant semed to work pretty well *mumble* years ago.

So here's the plan: Dinner, Thursday, 21 February 2013, at Shagga Coffee & Restaurant, 6040 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville, MD (240-296-3030), time to be determined based on folks responding to this and telling me when they can show up -- I'm planning to arrive early and stick around a while so some people can come early, like anybody bringing kids who have early bedtimes, and others show up later. Only problem is that the restaurant closes at 10:00 PM on Thursdays, so the serious night owls can't show up too late.

They said they're not usually busy on Thursday nights. If people RSVP, I can call ahead and tell them how many to expect. Entrees run $7.50 to $12.95 with most being around $11-$12. Shared sampler platters are available, as expected for Ethiopian. They serve beer and wine. Not as fancy as the places in Adams Morgan, but I've had lunch there a couple of times and enjoyed it. I haven't tried the meat dishes, of course, but the vegetarian ones are what you'd expect if you've eaten Ethiopian food in the DC area before[*]. Gifts are not expected -- I just want to see people and feel like I'm doing something kind of festive. I haven't been getting out and seeing my friends in person, and I miss y'all.

It's a small place. I don't know how many of you can make it, so I don't know whether it'll be a few of us at a couple of tables in the corner, or taking over most of the restaurant. Whether I wind up celebrating with a few of you or a horde, I'm looking forward to an evening out with friends (and yummy Ethiopian food). Please let me know what times work best for you (it'd be best to have that conversation in one place, like on Dreamwidth, but I know that's not going to happen so I'll just try to propogate relevant info between conversations in different places), and when I've got some idea of when people can be there, I'll announce times. So: comment at Dreamwidth (via OpenID if you don't have a DW login), or comment wherever you're reading this, or email me at dglenn@panix.com.

[*] Have any of my friends not had Ethiopian food? If so, here's what you need to know: dishes are mostly thick stews, served along with side dishes on top of a big piece of a thin, flexible bread called injera, on a platter, and there's a basket of rolled-up injera on the table. You tear off bits off injera and use them to pick up pinches or chunks of food -- no forks. And it's a lot more filling than it looks.

I was hoping the footnote would get in to a discussion of Ethiopian food made by either Ethiopians, or alternately by Eritreans, and of Eritrean food sold as Ethiopian food, as that's what Americans know of.

I don't know much about it, but I gather expecting one of the 4 and getting a different one will be at least mildly disconcerting.

Er ... whoops. Possibly the latter based solely on my experience of Ethiopian food being entirely in restaurants in the US. The vegetarian dishes, at least, resemble what's served at The Red Sea and The Blue Nile in Adams Morgan, Dukem in Baltimore, The Red Sea in Portland Oregon, and an Ethiopian restaurant I've forgotten the name of in what looks like a converted house in Silver Spring. So: what I've always gotten when I thought I was getting Ethiopian food. Guess I need to do some research.

So, yup, at some point Thursday night, but which point depends on whether I can skive off choir practice or at least shave it short at one end or the other, and I won't know that until this Thursday earliest.

They serve beer and wine.

Ah, but the question is whether they serve tej, which is Amharic for "mead"[*].

Feeding tej to Scadians is one of my new favorite hobbies. It tastes like Pennsic. The look on their faces is priceless. I'm sorry I won't be able to be there.

[* More specifically, "buckthorn metheglin" to get really pedantic.]

They serve a honey wine listed in the "Ethiopian Wines" section of the menu, so I assumed it was tej and didn't think to ask. I haven't tried it there because both times I was there I was driving and it was only lunch, but it did catch my eye on the menu, 'cause I'm rather fond of tej. (At other Ethiopian restaurants I've had tej made in Maryland, tej made in Canada, and IIRC, tej made in Ethiopia. I don't know where this restaurant gets theirs.)

I'd like to be there Thursday; there is not enough D.Glenn in my life lately. :) Also, I think Shagga is the place where I had really good coffee a while back, and I'm looking forward to more of it. And I can show up whenever it seems best for you, weather permitting -- if there's ice, I won't make it off the hill here.

Yay! (Hoping for non-ice weather.) They might be the place you had the good coffee -- I had a cup of Harar coffee there (despite the caffeine), and they have a couple of other coffee options, IIRC.

Hm...
If I can get accurate road directions I would seriously consider a road trip from NYC (depending on the road).

After thorough research, I'd love to join in if anyone's driving there via the George Washington Bridge. I'm local.

I'm in! After 6 should work for me, with 6:30 being pretty easy to make.

We must manage non-birthdayish times to get together then -- I want to start seeing friends again.

We're interested, but I've had trouble with Ethiopian food before. Specifically, cases where the 1 entree that fell within my spice tolerance was massively unappealing, (No, I'm not a wimp -- I'm a supertaster!) Do you happen to know whether there's a nice mild lamb stew or something of the kind? If so, I'm good.

And you'll get your usual birthday present after our trip to Canada in April.

Er ... there are not-hot-at-all Ethiopian dishes, at least to within my sensitivity, but they're still heavily spiced (just not with the hot spices). So I'm not sure whether the mild lamb stew would work for you or not. There's a potato dish that might, but I'm not sure ... the collard greens and the salad should be fine, but as nice as those are as sides, that's not a thrilling meal. Let me see whether I can arrange another peek at the menu before next week for more ideas.

happy Bday old man! I wish we could make it but I work tonight, so Johns got the kiddos. I hope your day is a special one and you all have a fun night!

Aww, I was hoping to find out what the kids thought of Ethiopian food! *hugs* Sorry you won't be there. Thanks for the birthday wish. Did y'all get the family-tree files I emailed? (I think I sent them to John.)
